The Mumbai bookings trap: Mondays, monsoon ferries and the caves people skip
Two closures catch visitors out every year. Elephanta Island is shut on Mondays, and the Gateway of India ferries stop running for most of the monsoon — typically from early June until the seas settle in late August or September — so a June-to-August trip built around Elephanta will not work as planned. The last boat back leaves the island around 5.30pm and there is nowhere to stay overnight, so the whole visit has to sit inside one day. Kanheri, inside Sanjay Gandhi National Park at Borivali East, is closed on Mondays too, which means a Monday arrival is better spent on the CSMVS in Kala Ghoda, Banganga Tank on Malabar Hill or the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco walk between Churchgate and Fort.
The area people wrongly skip is Borivali. It reads as a distant suburb on a map, but a fast Western Line train from Churchgate takes under 70 minutes, room rates are half what Colaba charges, and you are within reach of 109 Buddhist caves at Kanheri and the small Mandapeshwar group. The other local quirk worth planning around is the auto-rickshaw boundary at Mahim Creek: if you book north of it, your short trips cost ₹25–₹40 by auto, and if you book in Colaba or Fort they cost several times that by taxi. Finally, watch the Ganesh Chaturthi window in late August or September — the immersion processions through Girgaon, Lalbaug and Lower Parel close roads for hours at a time, and a hotel five minutes from your plans on a normal day can be an hour away that week.
Where to stay in Mumbai: which area suits which trip
Stay in Colaba, Fort, Kala Ghoda or Churchgate if you have come for the older Mumbai — the Gateway of India ferry jetty for Elephanta, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensemble that runs from the Oval Maidan across to Marine Drive, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. This is the most expensive strip for its star rating, with heritage four-stars on Apollo Bunder and small Colaba guesthouses in the same postcode at a fifth of the price. Marine Drive and Malabar Hill sit slightly above Fort on price and give you Banganga Tank at Walkeshwar and Girgaon Chowpatty on foot. Girgaon and Dadar are the value end of the south-central belt, well connected on the Western and Central lines and usually 30–40% cheaper than Colaba for a comparable room.
North of Mahim Creek the logic changes to work and flights. Bandra West and Khar are the restaurant-and-bar districts, Juhu is the beach hotel strip, and Santacruz and Andheri East are where airport-proximity rates apply — Andheri East also covers MIDC, SEEPZ and the Mahakali Caves. Powai, Lower Parel, Worli and Navi Mumbai (Vashi) are corporate addresses where big rooms are cheap at weekends and dear from Sunday night to Thursday; Thane, Chembur and Borivali are cheaper again, and Borivali puts you within a few kilometres of the 109 rock-cut caves at Kanheri inside Sanjay Gandhi National Park. For an overnight out of the city, Alibaug, Matheran, Lonavala and Karjat price by the weekend rather than by the season, and Lonavala and Karjat are the bases for the Karla, Bhaja, Bedse and Kondana cave groups.
Best time to visit Mumbai, month by month, and what rates do
November to February is the best time to visit Mumbai: daytime highs of 30–33°C, nights near 16–20°C, almost no rain, and the only period when a full day at Elephanta or Kanheri is comfortable. It is also the priciest window, because the wedding and conference calendar runs alongside it. January brings the Tata Mumbai Marathon on a Sunday mid-month, which shuts Marine Drive, Peddar Road and much of Fort to traffic from before dawn, and the Banganga Festival on Malabar Hill. February holds the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival across nine days in the Fort–Kala Ghoda blocks, and South Mumbai hotels raise rates and fill early for it. December's last fortnight is the single dearest stretch of the year in Colaba, Juhu and Bandra West.
March to May is hot and humid, climbing past 36°C with sea-level mugginess, and rates in South Mumbai soften by roughly a quarter — while Matheran and Lonavala go the other way and peak through the May school holidays. The southwest monsoon arrives around 10 June and runs to late September, dropping the bulk of Mumbai's roughly 2,200 mm of annual rain, with July the wettest month; Gateway of India ferries to Elephanta are suspended for most of this period. Ganesh Chaturthi falls in late August or September, and the ten days of processions to Girgaon Chowpatty close roads across Girgaon, Lalbaug and Lower Parel while filling every mid-range hotel nearby. October is the humid post-monsoon lull, the cheapest month to book, before Diwali pushes rates up again for a week or two. If you want low prices and can tolerate rain, mid-July to mid-September is 30–50% below December in the same hotel.
