Why people stay in Powai

Powai does not feel like Mumbai, and that is exactly why consultants keep booking it. A 2.2 sq km lake sits in the middle, IIT Bombay owns the whole eastern shore, and the western side is Hiranandani Gardens — a private-developer town of cream-coloured neoclassical towers with wide pavements that actually exist. Meetings here are at L&T's campus on Saki Vihar Road, CRISIL House, Kensington SEZ or the Chandivali business parks, and you can often walk to them. Nowhere else in the city offers a working professional both a footpath and a lake view before 9am.

The trade-off is isolation. Powai has no suburban railway station of its own: Kanjurmarg is about 3.5 km east, Ghatkopar and the Metro Line 1 interchange around 7 km south. When JVLR and the Andheri–Ghatkopar corridor seize up between 6pm and 9pm, a 9 km hop to Andheri East can take 55 minutes and cost ₹350 in a cab. If your week is split between BKC, Nariman Point and the airport, Powai will quietly eat two hours a day. Book it only when your meetings are genuinely on this side.

At 9pm Central Avenue is busy in a suburban, family way: Haiko Supermarket still open, Galleria's cafés full of IIT students on laptops, valet boys jogging cars around the Hiranandani complex. The bars close early by Mumbai standards — most kitchens stop at 11.30pm, and by midnight the only life is the 24-hour chemist and the Chandivali film-studio crews heading home. There is no late-night street food strip here comparable to Dadar or Mohammed Ali Road. If nightlife is the point of your trip, stay in Lower Parel or Bandra West and visit Powai for the day.

For the sustainability-minded traveller Powai is the strongest card in the city. Rodas and Meluha The Fern are both certified Ecotel properties with water and energy audits you can actually ask to see, the Renaissance and Westin sit on the lake with in-house convention space so delegates never board a vehicle, and the whole Hiranandani grid is walkable enough that a three-day trip can happen without a single taxi. Ask for a refill station rather than sealed bottles; the better hotels here will simply provide it.

Split the decision by which side of the lake you need. For lake views and conference space, the Renaissance and Lakeside Chalet on Adi Shankaracharya Marg and the Westin at Hiranandani Business Park run ₹9,000–₹16,000 a night midweek, more when a convention fills the ballroom. For eco-certified and quieter, Rodas and Meluha The Fern sit inside Hiranandani Gardens off Central Avenue at ₹6,500–₹11,000. Long-stay consultants should look at serviced apartments around Powai Plaza and Nahar Amrit Shakti in Chandivali, where a month runs ₹65,000–₹1,10,000. Avoid the very cheap guesthouses along Saki Vihar Road near the Chandivali junction — they are ₹2,500 rooms with no lift, generator noise and an unlit 700 m walk to any restaurant. Also avoid anything advertised as Powai but with a Vikhroli or Kanjurmarg address; the highway crossing is miserable on foot.

Things to do in Powai

01 Walk the Powai Lake promenade before breakfast
Walk the Powai Lake promenade before breakfast

The paved stretch along Adi Shankaracharya Marg between the Renaissance gate and the IIT boundary wall is best from 6am to 8am, when kingfishers work the reeds. Free, no ticket, no swimming — there are crocodiles in the lake and the signs are not decorative.

02 Get a day pass into IIT Bombay's campus
Get a day pass into IIT Bombay's campus

Enter at the Main Gate on Powai Lake side; visitors need a photo ID and a purpose at the security desk. The lakeside road past the hostels and Convocation Hall is the greenest 2 km in the eastern suburbs, and the campus canteens sell full thalis for under ₹120.

03 Eat at Mirchi and Mime in Chandivali
Eat at Mirchi and Mime in Chandivali

On Chandivali Farm Road, roughly 3 km from Hiranandani. The service team is deaf and you order in sign language from a picture menu — genuinely one of the city's best social-enterprise restaurants. Mains ₹450–₹700, dinner from 7pm, book ahead on a Friday.

04 Shop for groceries at Haiko, not the mall
Shop for groceries at Haiko, not the mall

Haiko Supermarket in the Hiranandani complex off Central Avenue is where long-stay travellers stock up: imported cheeses, Indian spices sold loose, cloth bags at the till. Open till around 10.30pm. Cheaper and faster than hotel room service for a two-week posting.

05 Take an evening class or gig at the Galleria
Take an evening class or gig at the Galleria

The Galleria arcade on Central Avenue hosts pop-up markets, book launches and student bands most weekends, with cafés like Chaayos and Starbucks staying open to 11pm. It is the only genuine public gathering space in Powai and a soft landing for solo travellers.

06 Cycle the Hiranandani grid at first light

Rental cycles and dock-based e-bikes appear near Powai Plaza and the Central Avenue crossings; expect ₹20–₹60 for half an hour. Between 6am and 8am the internal roads carry almost no traffic, and you can loop the entire township and lake road in under an hour.

Getting around Powai

Part of

From Terminal 2, Powai is 10–12 km via Sahar Road and Chandivali or JVLR: 25 minutes at 6am, 45–60 in the evening, ₹350–₹500 by app cab. From Terminal 1 it is closer to 25 minutes. There is no railway station in Powai; take a Central line train to Kanjurmarg (3.5 km, ₹15 second class) or Ghatkopar for the Versova–Andheri–Ghatkopar Metro Line 1, then an auto for ₹40–₹80. BEST buses run constantly along Adi Shankaracharya Marg and JVLR with fares from ₹5, ₹6 on air-conditioned services. Metro Line 6 along JVLR is under construction and will change all of this; until then, autos are the workhorse and are cheap.

Questions about Powai

Is Powai a good base if my meetings are in BKC?

Only just. Powai to BKC is about 12 km via the Santacruz–Chembur Link Road and JVLR, which is 30 minutes off-peak and 60–70 minutes at 9.30am. If more than half your meetings are in BKC, Andheri East or Santacruz are better bases. Powai wins when your work is at L&T, Kensington SEZ, Chandivali or IIT.

Can you actually walk around Powai?

Yes, inside Hiranandani Gardens and along the lake road, which is unusual for Mumbai — there are continuous footpaths, street lighting and pedestrian crossings that drivers respect. Outside the township, on Saki Vihar Road and JVLR, walking is unpleasant and sometimes unsafe. Plan on foot within the grid and autos for anything beyond it.

Which Powai hotels are genuinely eco-certified?

Rodas in Hiranandani Gardens and Meluha The Fern on Central Avenue are both Ecotel-certified, with rainwater harvesting, low-flow fittings and waste-segregation programmes rather than just a towel card. The larger lake hotels have credible energy and water reporting through their global chains. Ask for filtered-water refills and skip the daily linen change either way.

Is Powai Lake safe to walk at night?

The promenade is lit and busy with joggers until about 10pm, and solo women walk it routinely. After 10.30pm the stretch nearest the IIT wall empties out and is best avoided. Do not climb the bank or step onto the mudflats at any hour: the lake holds a resident crocodile population.
